Munch’s Scream

Posted by

the scream

If the artist wanted to transmit fear and despair, he succeeded marvelously!

The Scream is one of the most famous paintings of all time. It is actually a series of four artworks, two paintings and two pastels, series called by the Norwegian painter himself The Scream of Nature. The four artworks are all similar in their context. They portray this sinister figure on what appears to be a bridge, against an orange engulfed sky. The pieces are believed to be produced between 1893 and 1910. His most famous work, however, dates 1893.

Edvard Munch was drawn to paint psychological evocative themes, while his style was typical of late 1800 Symbolism and  German expressionism of the beginning 1900.

What stands up in this series is the expression of despair of the main figure’s face. A person on the verge of a mental breakdown. The emotions of fear, despair, obsession are so very vivid in the colors and lines of the artist that it even transmits pain to the observer.

They portray this sinister figure on what appears to be a bridge, against an orange engulfed sky.

One of The Scream series, not the most important piece however, was sold in New York in 2012 for a record 119 Million Dollars. Its more prestigious piece is exhibited at the Munch Museum in Oslo, where it was stolen in 2004, and later recovered in 2006 with little damage.
